Yoga for Aging Gracefully
How to Grow Older Skillfully
For years I’ve worked with people who face challenging issues that are part of the complicated transition into older age. Maybe you’re experiencing some of these challenges.
Maybe your body doesn’t feel like it used to. You’ve lost strength. Your joints have become stiffer and less flexible. You’ve notice that your posture is becoming stooped. Your movements are slower and more limited. Your overall energy has decreased. Increasingly, you feel like you are missing out on life. Maybe your thoughts, memory, and processing are less agile than they used to be.
For many it is an emotionally trying time. You might be caring for a sick spouse or loved one. The passing of friends and family has become more common. You find it hard to make the time for your own self-care. Over time, you are facing your own mortality and afraid of what the future will bring.
Seeing my client’s frustration and discouragement drove me to create this program, to enable you to:
- Experience more strength, flexibility and energy to do the things you love.
- Have a greater sense of emotional and spiritual well-being.
- Befriend your body and do everything you can to help it to be pain-free.
- Have a clearer mind and more focus so you can gracefully manage the stress and anxiety that comes with aging.
- Have the mental and emotional fortitude to face challenges that arise, as they always do, and accept that things change.
- Be engaged and active in your life.
- Be motivated and disciplined to continue to move and eat well.
- Be more open to giving and receiving love, so that you can continue to enjoy the people in your life and meet new people who bring you joy.
Your older years could be
the best time in your
Let's get real. This could be the best time in your life. Now that you don't have to work so hard to build your career or raise kids you have the time, right now, to take care of yourself like you never have before. Plus, we all know it's in everyone's best interest that you take care of yourself. Your loved ones will notice and appreciate that you are happy and healthy. And, if your sick or disabled you aren't going to be able to be there for them when they need you.
I’m Sierra Wagner, founder of Sierra Laurel Yoga. I have been a student of yoga for many years since the age of 13. With the encouragement of my teachers, I started teaching yoga at age 18.
I empathize with many older adults because I know how it feels to be unable to do basic tasks and movements that I had been able to do my whole life. At the age of 35 I had an accident and severely broke my ankle. I had two surgeries and couldn't walk for over four months. I had to do months of intensive and painful physical therapy.
On a personal level, it was incredibly humbling. Every step I took when I started to learn how to walk again was slow and painful for many months. And this is after years of being active in my body and enjoying independence. Without being able to go to many social events, I felt isolated from my community. I let go of a lot of things I loved for what seemed like a long time.
I found that as I slowly regained capability, I also gained greater confidence in my ability to persevere and found more acceptance of my limitations. I feel a sense of empowerment knowing that I can heal through my own actions informed by yoga's ancient wisdom and the science of modern-day medicine.
On a professional level, this and other challenging injuries have been extremely informative to my work. New ways to do the poses, new ideas about what yoga really is all about and greater empathy and compassion for myself and my students all emerged. These findings led me to become a yoga therapist, specializing in working with older adults with limited mobility, chronic conditions and persistent pain.
Now that I know how to successfully heal my body and ease my suffering I am inspired to help you through your own transitions and challenges so that you can experience the healing transformations and sense of empowerment that I have.
Yoga Therapy is a branch of yoga teaching that has been created for those working with an injury or managing a health condition. Yoga therapy sessions are designed to serve one's self-healing and help you do yoga safely. If you are facing health challenges, therapeutic yoga classes can help you manage your condition, reduce your symptoms and enhance your quality of life. My goal is to guide and assist my clients in becoming more empowered and support them in gaining the capability to heal themselves.
After teaching older adults and seniors since 2001, I put together the Yoga for Aging Gracefully system based on what I have seen to be the most important and needed areas for creating health and vitality. Inside are scientifically-proven practices for building strength, flexibility, balance, improving your energy, your cognitive function, your emotional health, and much more.
I've offered this program as live workshops and with private clients for years and have seen results. I've walked people through this program who have COPD, arthritis, diabetes, depression, polio, anxiety and spiritual questions and concerns.
I have created this program to work with people of many skill levels by offering variations and modifications for almost every pose. Yoga props, like straps, blocks and chairs, are utilized to support various body types. There is also a slow and gentle pace with plenty of time given in each module for rest and reflection.
Just imagine what it would be like if you had a home yoga practice that fits your lifestyle so that you can finally feel healthy and happier. I met Matica right after the loss of her husband of 40 years and her son. Both within a year of each other. It was a huge trauma that had dramatically changed her life. She came to me for both physical and spiritual healing. After her program was over, and she continued to take public classes with me, I often heard her reveling with the other students about the new found comfort in her body.

I'd like to share a success story with you. I met David just a few weeks after he had been in a comma that nearly took his life. He wanted to regain his strength and flexibility. After years of smoking and a serious case of pneumonia he had a persistent cough and his lung capacity was low. He also had low back and shoulder pain.
We worked together for about 6 weeks, the same amount of time as this program series. We addressed his respiratory health with breath exercises and chanting. His strength and flexibility came back through the regular practice of yoga postures. He took what he learned in our sessions and started practicing yoga at home. Beyond the physical benefits, over the weeks he also gained an increasing sense of inner confidence and peace.
What was it that made the most impact in his healing? His body was weak but his will was strong. One's motivation to do what it takes to heal is the most important factor. He sought out support and made it a priority to create a home practice for himself, which he did almost daily.
