Yoga Therapy Applying the Kosha Model to Yoga Therapy
The Koshas are distinct layers of our being, often understood as interconnected dimensions that shape our physical, energetic, mental, and spiritual experience. As a yoga therapist, I use this framework to guide personalized yoga sessions that support the whole person—not just isolated physical or psychological concerns. Through a carefully designed personalized yoga program, we work toward making the Koshas more transparent, balanced, and clear, supporting deep emotional healing and long-term mental wellness yoga practices.
My approach emphasizes collaboration. Whether working alongside healthcare providers or complementary practitioners, I aim to create a cohesive, integrative path that enhances the effectiveness of each client’s private yoga experience.
Annamaya Kosha: The Physical Body
Annamaya Kosha, meaning “made of the Earth,” represents the physical body. In private yoga, we care for this layer through movement, nourishment, and touch. Practices may include specific asana (postures), self-massage, and mindful exercise tailored to individual needs.
Depending on the client, I may guide a langhana (reducing, calming) practice to support yoga for stress relief and nervous system regulation, or a brahmana (expanding, energizing) practice to increase vitality. While I am not a nutritionist, I offer general, practical dietary suggestions to complement the physical aspect of a personalized yoga program.
Pranamaya Kosha: The Energy Body
Pranamaya Kosha governs our life-force energy. This layer is nourished through breathwork and meditation, intention-setting, and practices that cultivate gratitude and awareness.
In sessions, I tailor pranayama techniques based on individual needs. For example, stimulating breath practices may support low energy or depressive states, while calming techniques are especially beneficial for anxiety and stress relief. Guided visualization and meditation further support the flow of prana, enhancing vitality and restoring balance.
Manomaya Kosha: The Mental and Emotional Body
Manomaya Kosha encompasses thoughts, emotions, and patterns of perception. This is a central focus for emotional balance and mental wellness.
Through mindfulness, meditation, and compassionate inquiry, clients develop awareness of their internal experiences. Practices such as chanting, reflection, and acts of service can help release emotional tension and cultivate resilience. These approaches are especially valuable for those seeking emotional healing, as they allow space to process both challenges and joys with greater clarity and acceptance.
Vijnanamaya Kosha: The Wisdom Body
Vijnanamaya Kosha relates to intuition, insight, and inner wisdom. In my work as a yoga therapist, I integrate yogic philosophy and reflective practices to strengthen this layer.
We explore how lifestyle choices—such as media consumption, relationships, and daily habits—affect well-being. By shifting attention toward supportive and uplifting influences, clients can cultivate deeper clarity and alignment. Visualization and meditation further enhance this process, strengthening inner guidance within a personalized yoga program.
Anandamaya Kosha: The Bliss Body
Anandamaya Kosha represents a sense of inner peace and connection to one’s true self. When the other Koshas are balanced, this layer naturally becomes more accessible.
I may introduce subtle meditation practices focused on non-duality, impermanence, and loving-kindness (Metta). These practices foster joy, compassion, and connection. By exploring what brings genuine happiness and meaning, we integrate those elements into daily life, supporting lasting emotional healing and fulfillment.
